A deadly gun battle erupted on Tuesday in Anambra, leaving at least five individuals dead and several others wounded amid clashes between security forces and armed gunmen.
The confrontation unfolded as the Anambra Joint Security Force (JSF) launched operations against two gunman camps situated in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata council area, and Ogboji, Orumba South council area.
During the raids conducted by security personnel, various items including locally crafted rocket launchers, charms, and police uniforms were seized from the locations.
While Anambra police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu refrained from revealing specific casualty figures, reports indicate that four gunmen and a police officer lost their lives in the exchange of gunfire.
Witnesses described scenes resembling a war zone, with bullets whizzing through the air and causing panic among residents.
The recent violence adds to a string of security challenges in the region, as evidenced by the killing of two police officers in Awgbu, Orumba North local government area, and an attack on another police station by unidentified assailants in previous weeks.
In response to the escalating violence, the Anambra Police Command in Awka announced an expansion of operations into areas like Obofia Forest, Aguluezechukwu, and Ogboji, intensifying efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
