The process of nominating the new Olubadan hit an unexpected roadblock yesterday as eight out of the eleven kingmakers abstained from a crucial meeting convened by the Head of the Ibadan Traditional Council, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, at Mapo Hall.
During the meeting intended to kickstart the selection procedures for the next Olubadan, only Chief Ladoja was present, with the rest of the kingmakers notably absent.
Their absence has raised doubts about the nomination process, given their key role in the selection.
Among the absentees were prestigious titles such as Balogun, Otun Balogun, Osi Balogun, Ashipa Balogun, and the Ekerin Balogun, along with Otun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, Ashipa Olubadan, Ekerin Olubadan, and Iyalode, forming the Olubadan-in-Council.
Efforts to reach Oba Amidu Ajibade, the Ekerin Olubadan, for comments on their absence proved futile, with unanswered calls.
Speculation suggests the boycott may stem from past tensions between Chief Ladoja and other members, particularly regarding the contentious issue of beaded crowns by late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, a stance Ladoja opposed.
Additionally, when Governor Seyi Makinde endorsed the crowning and elevation of the kings, Ladoja abstained from the ceremony, emphasizing his disapproval.
Unlike his peers who embraced the title of “Oba,” Ladoja has retained the title of high Chief.
Speaking to journalists after the unsuccessful meeting, Ladoja clarified, “The other members feel that the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has not communicated with them. They mentioned they were unable to ascertain his health condition. They stated that when he’s ready, he will engage with them, and we will reconvene the meeting. The Olubadan-designate is expected to be present.”
Regarding his lone attendance, Ladoja explained, “A meeting was scheduled for today, and as the convener, I am present.”
Looking ahead, despite the setback, Ladoja remains optimistic, affirming, “The next step is for them to come when they are ready. I have called them, and their reason is that the Olubadan-designate has not communicated with them.”
