Over a decade ago, Funke Akindele released the game-changing comedy, Jenifa – a film about the titular character’s move from the village to the big city. Now, after three films and a 10-season spin-off, Jenifa’s Diary, the franchise has birthed yet another spin-off series, Aiyetoro Town.
This new series takes us back to Jenifa’s humble beginnings in Aiyetoro, as she keeps up to date with their affairs from a live YouTube stream. There’s a new Baale, whose aim is to upgrade the village to a town, starting with educating everyone – both young and old.
The first episode does a good job introducing (and re-introducing) us to show’s main leads, such as the Baale (played by Femi Branch), Laide (Motunrayo Adegboye, who played a supporting role in Jenifa’s Diary), Waidi (Tope Adebayo, who plays Jenifa’s younger brother) and more.
We see the Baale proposing his new plans to the town’s apprehensive councilmen, while Laide picks a fight with Jenifa’s enemies in the village. Just like the Jenifa franchise, Aiyetoro Town is entertaining and lighthearted, and we’re excited to see where the rest of the season takes us.
