Ojema Ojotu, a member of the House of Representatives is proposing a bill to include power rotation in the constitution for all elections.
Ojotu is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Apa\Agatu federal constituency of Benue state. The bill, which is yet to be listed for first reading, proposes to amend sections 133, 179, 48, and 49 of the constitution to rotate the office of the president among the six geopolitical zones, with each state holding the presidency for a maximum of two terms.
The proposed legislation aims to prevent the geopolitical zones that have previously produced presidents since May 1999 from doing so again, until all other zones have had the opportunity to produce a president. The north-east, north-central, and south-east geopolitical zones have not produced presidents since 1999.
