Some members of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State have staged a protest against the arrest of the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure.
Abure was taken into custody on Wednesday by the Police and DSS operative in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. Reports indicate that his arrest stemmed from allegations of premeditated attempted murder and other accusations.
According to information from Arise News, Abure’s apprehension followed a petition lodged by the party’s former Youth Leader, Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, to the Police.
Abure’s arrest occurred just two days before the party’s primary election in Edo state.
In a video statement, the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Dr. Ayo Olurunfemi, condemned Abure’s arrest as unjustified and criticized the manner in which it was carried out.
Olurunfemi affirmed the party’s determination to continue with its processes leading to the emergence of the Labour Party government in the state, despite any attempts at intimidation.
He further claimed that the allegations against Abure were fabricated by adversaries of the party to discredit him.
This incident follows earlier criticism directed at Abure, who was accused of misappropriating Party funds totaling over N3 billion. The suspended National Treasurer of the party, Oluchi Opara, had alleged that Abure misused N3.5 billion generated from the sales of nomination forms and other activities preceding the 2023 general election.
Abure, however, refuted these claims, asserting that only N1.5 billion was obtained from the sales of nomination forms and related proceeds.
