The fantastic “Before You Wake Up”, Adekunle Gold‘s first solo track since About 30, hinted at an exciting new direction for the talented artist, and his new single, “Kelegbe Megbe (Know Your Level)”, all but cements it — proving that we might be entering his strongest era yet.
Produced by Sess — the genius behind “Before You Wake Up” — “Kelegbe Megbe” is a spirited high-life bop, clearly inspired by Fela. On the track, Adekunle Gold reminds listeners that “money don’t buy charisma” and “Gucci no go sell swagger”, advicing everyone to know their level.
Speaking about the message of the song, Adekunle Gold said:
“When you know who you are, what you represent and are fully confident in yourself, you stop listening to opinions, trends and suggestions, good or bad.”
As is expected, given the song’s lyrics, the video for “Kelegbe Megbe” is incredibly stylish, which is also very typical of Adekunle Gold’s visuals. The video shows Adekunle Gold surrounded by fashionable women, through cuts in the jungle, on the beach and in a studio.
To highlight the song’s message of non-conformity, the Clarence Peters-directed clip is full of weird and wonderful fashion statements, as he shoots the models (both male and female) in goofy and eccentric accessories, from dollar-sign glasses to umbrella-like fascinators.
