The Supreme Court has taken a decision on a suit against a Governor elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The Apex Court reserved judgment in the appeal lodged by Saidu Umar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, challenging the election of Ahmad Aliyu of APC as Sokoto State governor.
In December 2023, the Court of Appeal upheld Aliyu’s election as Governor in the March 18 gubernatorial poll. Umar his party promptly filed a fresh appeal at the Supreme Court, listing nine grounds to set aside the concurrent rulings of the Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal that affirmed Aliyu’s victory.
The appellants argue that the Court of Appeal’s judgment goes against the weight of evidence and should be overturned by the Supreme Court.
