Napoli starlet, Gianluca Gaetano’s celebrations for his Serie A debut against SPAL turned tragic after his grandmother died as she celebrated him.
Gaetano was introduced into the Sunday, May 12, clash as a substitute in the 85th minute to make his league debut in his side’s 2-1 win over their opponents.
His debut saw family members storm the streets of Naples alongside Gaetano’s grandmother identified as Carmela, lighting fireworks in celebration.
However, Carmela is said to have been involved in a dispute with her neighbours who complained about the noise they made. It is at this point the granny suffered a fatal heart attack before eventually dying after first aid efforts to resuscitate her failed.
Gaetano took to his Instagram to pay an emotional tribute to the granny, thanking her for her support through his football journey.
”You saw me making the debut but I couldn’t see you for the last time, I thank you for everything about all the beautiful things done together, for the Christmas dinners and all of the birthdays,” he posted.
“Thanks for all these years, I’m sorry I didn’t see you for the last time and couldn’t hug you hard. I love you grandma, rest in peace, you will always be with me in my heart,” he added.
The 19-year-old wonderkid has had an impressive campaign with the reserve team this season, scoring 21 goals and providing eight assists.
