The Lagos State government has cautioned against factional frictions in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos Island unit, which has been precipitating violence in that part of the state.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Central Business Districts, Gbenga Oyerinde, at the weekend admonished the conflictual National Union of Road Transport Workers factions, hoodlums, and street urchins on Lagos Island to eschew from violence, bloodshed and restore peace on the island.
Oyerinde condemned the conflicts on the Lagos Island orchestrated by NURTW units, hoodlums and ‘area boys’ causing apprehension of breakdown of law and order.
Oyerinde traced the pandemonium to influx street urchins and hoodlums from other areas impersonating NURTW members.
The special adviser enjoined residents of the area, essentially, business owners, to be at alert and security conscious in the Lagos Island Business District.
There was outburst of violent confrontations on Thursday at Idumota, Kosoko, Oluwole, Martins, and Balogun areas in Lagos Island. The fracas was said to be between ‘Area Boys’ and hoodlums impersonating members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. The violent outburst obstructed business activities, creating fear of insecurity in the district.
