When musicians put out a body of work, scoring a hit is usually paramount, which often results in the album’s deep cuts carrying an air of relative unworthiness. True music lovers, however, know that the best songs are rarely the singles, and you need to dig deeper to find the real gems.
Looking back at the best Nigerian project of 2018, Burna Boy’s Outside, a lot of the best songs off the mixtape — from “Calm Down” to “PH City Vibration” — weren’t released as singles, and anyone who hasn’t listened to the entire album probably doesn’t know those bangers exist.
In Nigeria, a lot of the biggest hits are tailored to become just that, therefore, it can make the mainstream music sound a bit monotonous and samey. That’s another reason we love these deep cuts, as they also allow our favourite artists to show off their range.
So, as we await new projects from beloved stars like Tiwa Savage, Davido & Wizkid, we decided to take a plunge back into the albums we’ve loved in the past year and highlight some of our favourite deep cuts — from Peruzzi’s “Champion Lover” to Odunsi’s “Dancefloor”.
