South-West Governors Quiet On Sunday Igboho’s Arrest

The governors of the South-West appear to be keeping their mouths shut about the arrest of Yoruba agitator Sunday Igboho.

Igboho and his wife were detained at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on Monday.

The secessionist is contesting his extradition to Nigeria, where he might face treasonous criminal charges.

The Yoruba region’s governors have yet to take a stand on Igboho’s plight, either collectively or individually.

Any response on the topic, according to a source close to the South-West Governors Forum’s leadership, would be at the discretion of the chief executives.

“I don’t what their plans are. If they decide to respond, that’s fine. Whatever decision they take individually or as a caucus, we will all hear”, he said.

The governors have distanced themselves from proposals for Nigeria’s disintegration on several occasions.

The federal government, which has declined to comment on Igboho, began the process of bringing him back to the country within hours after his detention.

Supporters of the 48-year-old and Yoruba Nation supporters are calling for his unconditional release.

They claim that Nigerian authorities are lenient with terrorists and herders while pursuing self-determination groups.

Joe Okei-Odumakin, President of Women Arise and Centre for Change, urged to the Beninoise government not to repatriate Igboho on Wednesday.

Igboho cannot be certain of safety or justice in Nigeria, according to the outspoken activist.

“Igboho will come to grief if he is extradited under the prevailing circumstances”, Okei-Odumakin said in a statement.
