Magashi Bashir, the Minister of Defense, has announced that the Federal Government will soon begin the process of recruiting officers and soldiers to combat the Boko Haram insurgency and banditry.
Magashi made the remarks while leading the Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor, and other service chiefs on an operational visit to the Theatre Command headquarters in Maiduguri.
The Defence Minister told troops that the drive to hire more soldiers is part of the government’s plan to address manpower shortages.
They went to the Theatre Command, he said, to evaluate the fighting spirit of the troops in Operation Lafiya Dole and to inspire them.
“We will begin recruiting additional soldiers and officers very soon so that we can increase the manpower holding of our armed forces,” Magashi said.
“We’ll bring new equipment and skills that I’d like all of you to take advantage of so that you can be more proficient and successful in this task. We’ve squandered time; we’ve been at this for nearly ten years.
“We have a lot of other operations in this country in terms of banditry and other stuff, and I am confident that if you have the right resources, you will make this country proud. We believe in you, your training, and professionalism, and we believe you will meet the country’s needs in combating Boko Haram as it currently exists.
“There are a lot of you outside in other parts of the country, including the northwest, northcentral, southwest, and south-east. Please consider this a sacrifice, and consider this a career that only God can fear.”
