Update On Lagos Collapsed Building With Trapped Children

Nigerians living in Lagos were rudely interrupted on Wednesday by the sad news that a school building had collapsed and that many school pupils have been trapped, with some confirmed dead.

The 4 storey building collapse in Itafaaji, Lagos Island. There is a private school in the building and a lot of children are trapped. The collapse was said to be as a result of a dredging that happen within the area that affected the building.

Governor Akinwumnu Ambode, who arrived the scene at exactly 2:45pm, said from the briefing he got from the state Emergency Management Agency boss, 25 bodies have been rescued so far.

He said, “I’ve been briefed that the building is a residential building accommodating an illegal school on the second floor. The rescue team are fully in charge and they will continue with the rescue operation. But I appeal to people to give the rescue workers a chance to save more lives.”

He, however, said the state government will carry out an integrity test on buildings around the area and demolish and any that fails the test.

Lagos state fire and emergency have reached the scene, trying to rescue the children that are trapped.
