Deontay Wilder gave boxing fans a blast on Sunday after he knocked out his opponent, Dominic Breazeale, in the first round, retaining his WBC heavyweight title.
That phenomenal win prompted a fresh call from fans and experts for a showdown between the American and the unified heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua – and it appears the fight will happen after Joshua’s June 1st fixture.
Since Joshua picked up the IBF, WBA and WBO titles, his only dream has been to win the WBC title, becoming the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Wilder, who holds the WBC belt, has been delaying the fight despite receiving mouth-watering offers from Joshua’s team.
With Wilder’s win, boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, has said that the American must face Joshua next. And the good thing about all this is that Wilder is now more than willing to face Joshua, should the British-Nigerian win his upcoming fight against Andy Ruiz Jr.
We can’t contain our excitement here, because a Wilder-Joshua fight means the heavyweight boxing division will finally get an undisputed world champion after so many years. This is the fight to look forward to, and that’s why most fans are seeing Joshua’s fight with Ruiz Jr as a mere warmup.
Even though we know Joshua’s going to win on June 1st, we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
