10 years after hosting its last global football event, Nigeria is getting another chance, as FIFA has awarded the hosting rights for the 2020 Under-20 Women’s World Cup to the country – putting Nigeria in line to become the first African country ever to host the tournament.

Selecting a host for the tournament, which will be the 10th in history, has been tricky. It started off with bids from India and South Korea, and just when FIFA thought everything was settled, both countries withdrew their bids.

This led FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, to write the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), informing them that Nigeria has been selected to host the competition. According to TVC, this was confirmed by NFF president, Amaju Pinnick.

With the date of the event yet to be decided, FIFA officials are expected to be in the country next month to inspect the stadiums. Hopefully, Nigeria passes the inspection, given that we were confident enough to submit a bid to host the just concluded 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
