It’s true that women’s football has been taken for granted for too long. With some countries resolving to increase their women’s team’s salaries and provide better welfare packages for the players, it’s starting to look like it’ll soon be a thing of the past.
Now, speaking of progress, CAF has decided to add four more teams to the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON), meaning the number has expanded from eight to 12 for the next edition in 2020.
According to the CAF president, the confederation’s executive committee took the decision yesterday in Egypt. While he didn’t state any reason for the expansion, we have a feeling it has something to do with the recent campaigns to raise the profile of women’s football.
Of course, the expansion certainly means that CAF will come up with a new format for AWCON. It also means that more fans will be drawn to the competition, and women’s football certainly needs that. So, you can see why we’re totally here for this fantastic new step.
