With eight teams left in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the tournament is heating up. Nigeria and South Africa will square off tonight, and just as we expect the Super Eagles to win, we are also looking forward to seeing Odion Ighalo become the highest goalscorer in the tournament.
You will recall that Nigeria made it into this year’s AFCON in the first place because of Ighalo’s outstanding performances during the qualifiers. The 30-year-old recorded a total of seven goals to finish as the highest goalscorer, making fans very proud along the way.
As Nigeria steps into the AFCON quarterfinals, it’s starting to look like Ighalo is on his way to pulling off the same feat again. One of the most valuable players on the team, he now has a total of three goals – the same as Senegal’s Sadio Mané and Algeria’s Adam Ounas.
Although Ighalo has said he prefers the trophy to the AFCON Golden Boot, they’re thankfully not mutually exclusive. As he’s making efforts to score to give the Super Eagles their much-needed lead, he’s also creating chances of adding more goals under his belt.
We won’t be surprised to see him emerge the top scorer if Nigeria goes all the way to the finals.
