Following Maurizio Sarri’s exit from Chelsea, Frank Lampard was recently unveiled as the club’s new head coach. While Lampard is putting his coaching staff together, it has just been revealed that Nigeria-born Eddie Newton will be joining him in managing the club.
Newton, whose middle names are “John Ikem”, is currently in charge of monitoring players who join Chelsea on loan. According to SB Nation, the 47-year-old started his coaching career in 2008 and now has over a decade of experience.
Before he went into coaching, he played for Chelsea all the way from the youth team to the senior team, helping the club win the FA Cup in ’97. He was also part of the Chelsea team that won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final and the Football League Cup Final in ’98.
With these records, there’s no doubt Newton has deep roots at Chelsea. In his new role as an assistant coach, we look forward to seeing him bring out the best in the players and, possibly, bring on more African players.
