Last year, we at Konbini wrote about how Surf Ghana is helping build a vibrant community of skateboarders and surfers in Ghana. With the collective well on its way, the founder, Sandy Alibo, has just started the country’s first all-female skate crew, Skate Gal Club.
Alibo was inspired to take up the project after seeing the impact similar skateboarding organisations were having in France. Although the club is exclusive to women and girls, it’s an offshoot of Surf Ghana, focusing specifically on creating a safe and empowering space.
Well, It doesn’t just end there. While showcasing Ghanaian talent to the world, Skate Gal also serves as a platform for members to share their experiences as entrepreneurs. And this is great news, given that the club is making plans to come to Nigeria to share their skills.
Since Skate Gal‘s first event, the project has received a lot of good feedback. Speaking to Konbini about that, Alibo said:
“More than 60 women came to try skateboarding. The women who came are multi-talented, and that’s why this experience was wonderful. They all want to contribute to the event and make it grow.”
Like every project, Skate Gal faces its own challenges, and they include lack of funds, sponsorship and a safe place to skate. While the organisers are hoping that brands will step in, they’re making the most out of the little they have to empower the youth and contribute to tourism in Ghana.
Meanwhile, you can contribute to the project through their GoFundMe.
