With the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaching, participating countries are on their toes, putting their teams together for the showpiece, which was expanded from 16 to 24 teams. Like a bunch of other countries, Nigeria has now released their provisional list for the tournament.
Although some fans have accused the coach, Gernot Rohr, of ignoring local players (an accusation he has denied), you will agree that it’s risky to take in a player whose competence and skills have not been tested in a tournament as huge as AFCON.
So, it’s not surprising that the players seem to have been chosen based on experience and record of performance on the national team — as they have all either made a name for themselves in Europe or were part of the team that helped Nigeria qualify.
While we trust Mikel Obi to lead the Super Eagles as captain, we have reservations about the inclusion of Francis Uzoho and Kelechi Iheanacho, as neither of them has impressed in recent times. Anyway, we hope they end up proving us wrong.
