A year ago, Alphonso Davies caught our attention when he was invited for a trial at Manchester United. He later went on to break the transfer fee record in Major League Soccer (MLS), and now, less than a year after, he has become the youngest player to score for Bayern Munich in 20 years.
The youngest player ever to score for the club was Roque Santa Cruz, and he was 18 years and 12 days old when he achieved the feat in 1999. Davies came close to breaking the record on Sunday when he scored his first goal for Bayern, aged 18 years and 15 days old.
According to the Bundesliga website, he has also become the first ever Canadian and the first player born in 2000 or after to score for Bayern. The goal, which was his first in the Bundesliga, has also made him the first Canadian goalscorer in the Bundesliga since 2013.
Now, we fully expect Bayern’s coach to give him more playing time just like he did on Sunday. After all, a young player of his caliber deserves enough chances to show what he’s made of, and we have a feeling he will keep impressing.
