Nigeria has recorded 49 new cases of coronavirus in Lagos, Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Kano, Ogun, Oyo, and Ekiti states.

This brings the total number of infections in the country to 542.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control made this known via its Twitter handle on Saturday.

The NCDC stated that the total number of coronavirus-related deaths has risen to 19 in the country.

Abba Kyari, the Chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, is one of the deaths of COVID-19.

The deceased had tested positive to the ravaging COVID-19 and had been receiving treatment in Lagos where he was said to have died on Friday, April 17.

Kyari tested positive for coronavirus in late March after visiting Germany, forcing a string of top Nigerian officials, including governors who had been in contact with him to self-isolate.

Kyari, 67, is the highest-profile COVID-19 death in Nigeria, The PUNCH reports.

There has been no official confirmation on whether Buhari took a test, but the president has made two televised speeches imposing restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.

He had imposed a lockdown on Lagos, Ogun and Abuja, while governors have introduced several measures in their states.
