Kieran Tierney is facing a tough battle with England under-18 international Bukayo Saka to be first choice left-back at Arsenal , according to Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

Saka was drafted into the position from his more natural left-wing role after injuries to Tierney and Sead Kolasinac left the Gunners struggling.

The young star’s performances since have left him being talked about for an England cap after he grabbed a goal and four assists in ten games from his adopted postion.

And ahead of this weekend’s tie with relegation-haunted West Ham , Arteta stressed that £25m signing Tierney will not just walk into the his first XI.

“They (Saka and Tierney) have to compete, they have to challenge each other and improve. Whoever is best will be in the position, which is a really good thing for the team,” he said.

“I think he (Saka) is doing really well with us. International level is a different level. It is up to the England manager to discuss whether he is ready to do that and what is he going to do with his squad. Whatever he decides we will support the idea and the player.”

While Tierney isn’t ready to return just yet, Arteta revealed that the former Celtic star is now back in full training.

He said: “He’s done two or three complete sessions now.

“He’s feeling more and more confident with contact around him and hopefully he will join in the squad soon.”
