Sponsor of the bill seeking to address hate speech in Nigeria, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi has said that the death penalty aspect of the bill will be amended.

KanyiDaily had reported that a bill titled, ‘National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speeches Bill 2019’ passed its first reading in the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday, November 12, 2019.

The bill prescribed death by hanging for any person found guilty of any form of hate speech that results in the death of another person.

According to TheCable, the sponsor of the hate speech said the death penalty aspect will be amended in line with the wish of Nigerians.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, Aliyu Abdullahi said the bill will undergo some fine-tuning to reflect the views of Nigerians.

He added that the Senate will accept contributions and input by critics and supporters of the bill, saying such will go a long way in giving Nigerians the law to address the disturbing trend of hate speech.
