Watch The Trailer For Adesua Etomi-Led Animated Series, ‘Malika: Warrior Queen’

Since Roye Okupe announced his plans to turn his acclaimed graphic novel, Malika: Warrior Queen, into an animated series, we’ve been very excited. Now, we’ve finally gotten a trailer for the Adesua Etomi-led pilot, and it looks every bit as incredible we’d hoped.

Inspired by Queen Amina, Malika: Warrior Queen is a stunning two-part graphic novel set in 15th century pre-colonial Africa,  and the trailer indicates that this incredible story has been brought to vivid life by the animators and voice actors.

The trailer shows Malika fearlessly standing up to defend herself and her people against enemies — both inside and outside her kingdom — who have set their sights on seizing her expanding empire of Azzaz. She confidently declares:

“I am my own champion.”

The animated pilot — which was written and directed by Roye Okupe, and executive produced by Niyi Akinmolayan of Anthill Studios — consists of three scenes, with a total runtime of 15 minutes. Etomi is joined by Femi Branch, Deyemi Okanlowon, Blossom Chukwujekwu and Sambassa Nzeribe.

While contributors to YouNeek Studios’ recent Kickstarter campaign will get first dibs on the pilot via a streaming link today, Malika: Warrior Queen will be screened at the 8th Annual Lagos Comic Convention on September 21, and then at the 6th Annual MECCAcon in Detroit, Michigan.
