Back in 2013, Nigerian photographer and filmmaker, Andrew Dosunmu came out with his sophomore feature, “Mother of George” — a breathtaking drama that has now been named the 93rd best movie of the decade by notable film review site, IndieWire.
Mother Of George tells the gripping story of Ayodele (Casino Royale‘s Issach de Bankolé) and Adenike Balogun (Black Panther‘s Danai Gurira), a newly married Nigerian couple in Brooklyn, who own and manage a small restaurant while struggling with fertility issues.
As we all know, in Nigerian culture, having a baby is pretty much expected of every married couple, so the difficulty that Adenike and Ayodele face leaves them terribly vulnerable. This ultimately leads Adenike to a drastic solution that could tear her and her husband apart.
The film, which Indiewire described as “devastating and dazzling in equal measure” is in very good company, as it makes the list alongside Oscar winners and critics’ favourites like Mad Max: Fury Road, Moonlight, Black Panther, Lady Bird, The Wolf Of Wall Street and more.
About his nomination of the film for IndieWire‘s top 100 films of the decade, Tambay Obenson said
“Made for the big screen but still waiting for a big audience, Mother of George is not only one of the best films of this decade, it will also be one of the best discoveries of the next.”
