While fans await what might be John Boyega last appearance in the Star Wars franchise, the British-Nigerian actor already has a number of exciting projects lined up — from starring in the film adaptation of the hit novel, A Naked Singularity to producing South African thriller, God is Good.
Thankfully, the beloved actor is not stopping there. Deadline reports that Boyega is now set to star alongside Black Panther breakout star, Letitia Wright in Steve McQueen’s upcoming TV drama, Small Axe — about London’s West Indian community between the 1960s-80s.
Boyega and Wright are already set to co-star in upcoming sci-fi romance, Hold Back The Stars, but Small Axe — which will comprise of six parts and tell five different stories — certainly has us more excited, specifically because it’s being helmed by the genius behind the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave
Speaking about the project, McQueen said:
“I felt these stories needed to be shared. I wanted to relive, reevaluate and investigate the journeys that my parents and the first generation of West Indians went on to deliver me here today calling myself a black British person. What’s important about our stories is that they are local but at the same time global.
I think audiences will identify with the trials, tribulations and joy of our characters as well as reflecting on the present environment in which we find ourselves. The dynamic nature of the series allows us to confront injustice in the face of adversity.”
Production is now underway on location in London. Rounding out the cast are Malachi Kirby (Roots), Shaun Parkes (Lost In Space), Rochenda Sandall (Line Of Duty), Alex Jennings (Victoria) and Jack Lowden (Mary Queen Of Scots).
