Ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued security advisories to Nigerians living in the country.
The High Commission in a statement issued on Monday, February 5, 2024, observed the potentially inflammatory online comments and veiled threats against Nigerians by a section of South Africans.
They were urged to be mindful of their utterances and also where to watch the game to prevent being attacked.
“In this regard, the High Commission advised members of the Nigerian community to be watchful of their utterances, be mindful of where they choose to watch the match especially in public places and to refrain from engaging in loud, riotous or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles win the match,” the statement read.
“Additionally, Nigerians should maintain the good conduct they are known for, and be law abiding before, during and after the match. Should any provocations arise, they should not be reciprocated but reported to the appropriate authorities.”
