With William Troost-Ekong set to make his first-ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance at the upcoming tournament in Egypt, the 25-year-old is using his rising visibility for an important cause, kicking off a commendable campaign against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

According to ENVISION, NTDs like trachoma, Buruli ulcer, leprosy and guinea worm disease are very prevalent in Nigeria, with an estimated 100 million people at risk of contracting at least one of them — the highest NTD burden in Africa.

While the Federal Ministry of Health is doing its best to tackle NTDs, Troost-Ekong has partnered with The END Fund, a private philanthropic initiative, to create awareness. In his campaign video, he calls on Nigerians to participate in the free treatment being offered across the country.

In his own words:

“Football is a powerful force in Nigeria, and as a footballer and parent, I believe we should do everything we can to end these preventable and treatable diseases that stand between you and your goals.”

Football tournaments are really effective means to send messages across to people, and we’re super glad that Troost-Ekong is using the 2019 AFCON as a platform to highlight the importance of fighting NTDs in Nigeria.
