Finally, Manchester United make a transfer breakthrough with a goalie close to sealing a deal

The reports reaching National Daily have suggested that Manchester United are finally close to completing a shock move for Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

National Daily gathered from the claim by Sponichi, that the 20-year-old Urawa Red Diamonds goal tender has been scouted by the Red Devils since 2017 with United ready to make him the most expensive signing in the history of the J League.

The Old Trafford club have identified huge potential in the American-born goalkeeper and have already made a formal offer of £5million, eclipsing the £4.5m Celtic paid to sign Kyogo Furuhashi in 2021.

The report adds negotiations between United and Urawa are progressing smoothy with a transfer viewed as imminent.

It is understood that Suzuki has represented Japan at every youth level but is still to make his senior national debut.

This season, he has been limited to just five starts in cup competition with veteran Shusaku Nishikawa still his club’s first choice option in goal.

Suzuki has made eight league appearances in total to date.

United’s goalkeeper situation remains hugely uncertain but it could be the case where the club are required to bring in two new options this summer.

David de Gea’s contract at the club expired last week, leaving as a free agent as a result. United are still in talks with the Spaniard to extend his stay at Old Trafford but on greatly reduced terms.

Meanwhile, United are believed to have remained in talks with Inter Milan regarding the move for their 27-year-old goalkeeper and are thought to have made an offer of £39million including add-ons. Inter want closer to £45million but there is expectation the two clubs with find a compromise.

United may also require a back-up option should de Gea not re-sign with the club.

Jack Butland, recruited on loan for the second-half of last season, has now joined Rangers with Tom Heaton being offered first-team football opportunities at newly-promoted Luton Town.
