Nigeria Makes History With Second Game Win At The Women’s World Cup

Nigeria is typically a force to reckoned with in women’s football tournaments in Africa, but the Women’s World Cup is a different beast. Since it was founded in 1991, no African country has won their second group game, that is, until yesterday, when the Super Falcons beat South Korea 2-0.

The past seven editions of the tournament have seen African teams play a total of 12 second-group matches, all of which ended in defeat. However, Nigeria ended all that, thanks to an own goal from a South Korea player and another goal from the fantastic Asisat Oshoala.

The victory was also the first one in the tournament for the Super Falcons, who lost their first match to Norway. Considering that Nigeria became the first African team to make it through to the quarter-finals of the tournament in 1999, this new record has now reaffirmed the country’s reputation.

We know they’re not going to have it easy on Monday, when they face the host country, France, in their final group game, but since all they need is a draw to qualify, we have a lot of faith that they can actually pull it off. We’re seriously rooting for the team to do us proud.
