Completesports.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU highlights four things learnt from the U-23 Eagles’ 4-0 drubbing of Libya in the second leg of their U-23 AFCON qualifying clash at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba on Monday March 25, 2019. ..
1. Osimhen Showed ‘Predatory’ Prowess
Three goals and an assist in a single game is enough for a striker to prove he is still one of the best in the business. That was what Victor Osimhen did against Libya on Monday. He could have scored more, but for the cross bar and some smart saves from the Libyan goalkeeper.
For a player whose career has slowed down since hogging the headlines at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015 where he scored 10 goals to help Nigeria win a record fifth title, his performance showed he can still perform at the highest level.
2. Rich Bench Made U-23 Eagles Tick
This U-23 Eagles squad that face Libya had depth, which is one of the hallmarks of a good and solid team. The Introduction of Dennis Blessed and David Okereke changed the complexion of the game in the second half and was one of the key reasons Nigeria won the match convincingly.
The lively Blessed had a hand in the second goal, while Okereke scored the fourth.
3. Awaziem, Ozornwafor Flourished At Centre-Back
The duo who were drafted into the team from the Super Eagles played in a competitive game together for the first time and showed near perfect understanding all through.
Awaziem was solid and superb with his ball distribution, while Ozornwafor made occasional forays upfront.
4. Awoniyi Needs To Step Up
A lot was expected from the lanky forward in this game, but he failed to offer much over the two legs. He missed a sitter against Libya in Asaba, and was a shadow of himself until he was subbed off.
With substitutes Dennis Blessed and David Okereke impressing, Awoniyi surely need to step up or risk losing his place in the team.
