Producer albums are becoming increasingly popular, as the geniuses that power our favourite tracks look to take more creative control.
On most of such albums, the beatsmiths rely on the voices of featured acts to carry their songs, but Del B‘s debut project, Afrodisiac does things differently: He confidently performs on all the tracks, even flying solo on standouts, “Boogie Down” and “Lie”.
Afrodisiac opens with a fittingly seductive track — considering the mixtape’s suggestive title — that features one of afropop’s sultriest singers, Seyi Shay. “Sexy Lover” is a laid-back bop that sets the tone for the rest of the project, as chill vibes resonate throughout.
That phenomenal opener is followed by another spectacular offering, “Tattoo”, featuring the unexpected pairing of Mr Eazi and Davido. Mr Eazi, who really shines on “Tattoo”, appears for a second time on the project, bringing a similar energy to “Pause”.
With other popular acts such as Wizkid, Flavour, Runtown and even the radio goddess, Moet Abebe — who addresses sexual harassment on her “PSA” interlude — assisting Del B on this tape, it is no surprise that Afrodisiac is full of jams.
