Arsenal Beat 10-man Southampton To Keep Champions League Qualification Hopes Alive

A goal in each half by youngsters Edward Nkekiah and Joseph Willock saw Arsenal return to winning ways with a 2-0 victory against 10-man Southampton at Saint Mary’s in Thursday night’s Premier League game, Completesports.com reports.

It had not been the best of return for the Gunners who had lost back-to-back games prior to meeting Southampton.

Also, the win against Southampton puts them in the mix for Champions League qualification for next season.

Bukayo Saka who has been impressive for Arsenal this season, was in action and played for 90 minutes.

Arsenal went 1-0 up in the 20th minute 
as Nketiah pounced on Alex McCarthy’s mistake, took the ball round the ‘keeper before slotting the ball into the net.

In the 85th minute Southampton were reduced to 10 men after Jack Stephens was sent off for a foul on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal took advantage of the numerical advantage thanks to Willock who scored at close range to double the Gunners’ lead after Alexandre Lacazette’s shot was blocked.

The win saw Arsenal climb to ninth position on 43 points and are six points away from fifth which could be a Champions League qualification spot.

And in another Premier League game played on Thursday, Burnley defeated Watford 1-0.

Jay Rodriguez broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute with an excellent header from Dwight McNeil’s ball in.
