Four months ago, Asisat Oshoala left Dalian Quanjian in the Chinese Women’s Super League to join Barcelona Women on loan. In just one season, her return to Europe has paid off, and due to her standout performance, she’s been signed on a permanent deal.
According to the club’s website, the new deal specifies that Oshoala will be on the team until June 2022. Given that the option of signing her on a permanent deal was there right from the start, it’s safe to say that Barcelona was only testing her for one season. And, boy, did she deliver?
Within a few weeks of joining the club, we started hearing about the 24-year-old’s exploits in Europe. By the end of the season, she had scored eight goals in 11 appearances across all competitions, helping her club qualify for their first ever Women’s Champions League finals.
She made history as the first Nigerian woman to qualify for the competition’s finals, and then became the first African to score in a Women’s Champions League finals. Although her team didn’t win the title, Oshoala certainly made them a force to be reckoned with.
We can’t wait to see what more she brings to the table when the 2019-2020 season kicks off.
