Although Nigeria qualified for the 2019 AFCON with a game to spare, we saw a lot of lapses on the team during the qualifiers. Now, according to All Nigeria Soccer, the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr is considering bringing on three new players to strengthen the squad.

He mentioned Efe Ambrose, Maduka Okoye and Felix Uduokhai as the new names under consideration, and we at Konbini went digging to find out about these players.

Efe Ambrose

The fact that Ambrose is 30 years old should give you an inkling that he’s not a new name in Nigerian football. Since 2007, he has made appearances on the Nigeria under-20 and under-23 teams. He even played on the senior team at the 2013 AFCON, which Nigeria won.

Sadly, despite his experience and versatility on the pitch, he hasn’t been selected for the team since 2016.

Maduka Okoye

There’s an obvious lapse in goalkeeping on the Super Eagles team. In fact, goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho seems to have too much pressure on him and that’s why Rohr is considering Okoye.

The 19-year-old is the current goalkeeper for German second division club, Fortuna Düsseldorf II. Since late last year, he’s been saying he’s interested in playing for Nigeria, and now it seems he might finally be getting a chance.

Felix Uduokhai

Just like Okoye, 21-year-old Uduokhai is half-German. He currently plays as a defender for VfL Wolfsburg, where he has scored one goal in 28 appearances. He also plays for the Germany under-21 team.

In 2017, he got a call to join the Super Eagles, but he turned it down. When Nigeria qualified for Russia 2018, he finally became open to joining the team. Well, now that Rohr is considering him, we hope he’s ready to switch allegiances from Germany to Nigeria.
