In a tear-jacking farewell ritual by dethroned Kano Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a handful of sympathisers were seen on the tarmac of the Aminu Kano International Airport, raising hands in prayers which Sanusi himself led as he was about to board a chartered plane that will carrying him into exile on Monday.
He will serve out his banishment either in Abuja or Nasarawa, in house arrest.
The passion play at the airport climaxed a years-long series of skirmishes between Kano Gov Abdulahi Ganduje and the outspoken emir.
Although the state government accused Sanusi of abusing his traditional office and disrespect to authorities, many believe the former bank executive paid for his endless criticism of both the state and federal government.
Apparently, his style of leadership and cushy living didn’t go down well with majority of the citizens.
A larger crowd of well wishers besieged the house of Sanusi’s successor Aminu Ado Bayero yesterday when the former prince was appointed.
Bayero and Sanusi were the two contenders to the throne in 2014 when the scale tipped in favour of the former CBN governor because of his affinity with then Gov. Rabiu Kwakwanso and the APC, in opposition, then.
