The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo says the essence of the parliament in any democracy is to ensure effective appropriation, conduct plenary and carry out oversight on all projects appropriated for, the absence of which is an autocratic government.
Oluomo stated this while playing host to the International Commission of the Youth Wing of Christian Democratic Union (CDU), of the ruling party in Germany during an exchange programmme by the CDU facilitated by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung ( KAS) led by Dr. Vladimir Kreck held in Abeokuta.
He explained that the legislative arm in Nigeria also organise community engagements, carry out other quasi-judicial functions for the overall peace and progress of their Constituencies.
The Speaker in company of some of his colleague lawmakers, underscored the need to uphold and strengthen the distinct roles of the parliament, which he noted remained pivotal to democratic practice in any part of the world.
Commenting on developmental issues relating to the State, the Speaker stated that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration in the State was committed to opening more channels of investment opportunities for prospective investors through a proposed Public Private Partnership legislation which would be given accelerated passage by the Assembly to improve on the infrastructure in all sectors of the State economy.
He added that plans were underway by the present administration to strengthen security, with an assurance that the State would gear up plans to tap into her rich agricultural potentials having concluded arrangements for the financing of the Anchors Borrowers’ Programme with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Responding, the country representative of KAS, Dr. Vladimir Kreck and the leader of CDU, Mr Yannich Bury, lauded the State Assembly for the cross ferterlization of ideas on legislative practice, which they noted would broaden their horizon in ensuring quality representation, with an assurance that they would sustain stronger bilateral ties for more working relationships.
The Speaker also attended the 2019 Annual General Conference of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), where he was commended by the foremost human rights activist and legal luminary, Femi Falana for his contributions towards promoting democratic ideals.
Falana sought for the support of the Assembly for the passage of legislations that would further promote human rights and other related issues in the State, saying the role of the State as a pace setter should be sustained through support for issues relating to human rights.
