For some time now, Nigeria has been in the backseat with regards to sprints in Africa, but the 2019 African Games has given the country a chance at redemption. Just yesterday, Raymond Ekevwo became the first Nigerian man to win the 100 metres at the competition since 2007.

As most fans know, Divine Oduduru was listed for the 100 metres, but since he didn’t arrive in Morocco on time, Ekevwo had to take his place. The athlete powered to the finish line in 9.96 seconds, ahead of Cote d’Ivoire’s Arthur Cissé, who finished in 9.97 seconds.

According to Making of Champions, before the final race, Ekevwo was unbeaten through the rounds, as he recorded the overall fastest time of 10.20 seconds in the heats, as well as winning the semis in 10.26 seconds.

This personal best has now made him the second Nigerian to run the 100 metres in under 10 seconds this year, after Oduduru. And, since Ekevwo achieved it at the African Games, it’s safe to say that he’s now the fastest man in Africa.
