The authorities of the Nigeria Army on Saturday confirmed that the soldier involved in the alleged rape of a female student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, has been handed over to the Ondo State Police Command for prosecution.
It was gathered that the suspect, Lance Corporal Sunday Adelola, has earlier been dismissed from the service by the army before he was handed over to the police.
According to a source within the barrack, the suspect had been tried at the brigade and has been dismissed by the military.
The source said: “He has been sacked from service and he has been transferred to the police for prosecution. The army does not tolerate indiscipline.”
The Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade Akure, Brig. Gen. Zakari Abubakar, had earlier promised to transfer the case to the police after the alleged randy soldier must have been sacked and the investigation concluded.
Confirming the development, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed said the suspect had been handed over to the police in the state and would soon be charged to court.
“I can confirm to you that the soldier has been handed over to us, he will soon charge him to court,” Joseph stated.
The suspect was alleged to have raped a 300-level student of the Department of Religious and African Studies of AAUA, inside a shed at the checkpoint, while the student was returning from the school.
It was earlier reported that the student was gang-raped, however, the investigation of the army revealed that only one of the soldiers committed the offence.
