Three years ago, Drake’s “One Dance” was released, nabbing Wizkid his first Billboard Hot 100 number 1 hit. Now, he’s made his way back on the charts with Beyoncé‘s “Brown Skin Girl”, which just debuted at number 76 – higher than any other track off The Lion King: The Gift.
The Billboard Hot 100 rankings are based on sales, radio play, and online streaming in the United States. It comes as no surprise that “Brown Skin Girl” made the cut, as its powerful message of acceptance and validation has resonated with a lot of black women and girls.
Historically, black women have been ridiculed and objectified for the way they look, therefore, this nod from Beyoncé, the greatest living entertainer, was very welcome. The song definitely also benefitted from Wizkid’s contribution, as he is the biggest afropop star working today.
Well, the song is clearly a favourite off the album, and we’re excited to see how far up the chart it will climb. The fact it even debuted on the chart without being a single is pretty damn impressive, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it nab a Grammy nomination later on in the year.
