Two years ago, Edward Enninful was named editor-in-chief of British Vogue, making history as the first black person hired for this role. Since then, he has assembled a new team of contributors to create more meaningful and diverse content.

Now, he has tapped the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle to guest-edit the magazine’s September issue, and Meghan has selected a diverse group of 15 women who inspire her for the cover story, including our very own Chimamanda Adichie

The September issue of any fashion magazine is the most essential one, as it marks the beginning of the fashion new year, and whatever information these media houses disseminate, especially huge ones like Vogue, sets the tone for the rest of the fashion season.

Well, it looks like British Vogue is looking to set new trends apart from fashion, as this September issue is themed ‘Forces for Change’, and it sees the duchess “highlight a cast of brilliant female change-makers who are set to reshape society in radical and positive ways”.

Given this, it should come as no shock that Chimamanda was selected, as she is one of the world’s most popular feminists. Her Ted Talk, We Should All Be Feminists made such an impact around the world that Beyoncé even sampled it on her girl-power anthem, “Flawless”

When asked what changes she would like to see in the world, Chimamanda said:

“I long for more stories of women who are strong without being superheroes, who do not need to be extraordinary to be admirable.”

The Duchess also chose other Africans, such as Sudan’s Adut Aketch and Ghana’s Adwoa Aboah. Yara Shahidi, Salma Hayek and Laverne Cox – the first trans person to be featured on a Vogue cover – also made the cut. We’re really excited about this issue, and we can’t wait to read Chimamanda’s interview.
