Since his 2017 EP, Boomerang — a follow-up to his acclaimed debut, The Chief — Jidenna has been frustratingly quiet, releasing no new music. Thankfully, that dry spell is finally over, as the Grammy nominee has dropped two new singles, “Sufi Woman“, and “Tribe”.
“Sufi Woman” and “Tribe” are two distinctly different tracks. Singing to his Sufi woman, who has charmed him with her spiritual wiles, the first track of this double release is a highlife number, coloured by Jidenna’s catchy bars and delivered with his raw, captivating voice.
“Tribe”, the second of the two release, is a more hip-hop leaning number — one that sees Jidenna preaching about camaraderie. Advising us to know exactly who has our back and not get swept up in all the niceties, Jidenna gives a shoutout to his friends-turned-family.
With recent reports that Jidenna’s sophomore album is in its final stages, we’re pretty excited for what’s to come. If “Sufi Woman” and “Tribe” are any indication, the versatile artist is about to come through with yet another project that shows off his impressive range.
