Konbini Picks: The Months Of The Year As Our Favourite Nigerian Songs

With July known for the terrible rain that comes along with it, and December being the undisputed party month — with many people flocking here for the unparalleled experience — it is safe to say that each month in the Nigerian calendar has its own rather unique character.

Songs are a brilliant way of conveying certain feelings or describing moments without actually having to say much. So, for a bit of fun, we at Konbini decided to use seminal Nigerians songs from the past two decades to describe what each month of the year means to us.

January: “One” — Tiwa Savage

The new year is always a prayerful time for Nigerians, as the resetting of our calendars offers the semblance of a fresh start. Tiwa Savage’s grateful single, “One” is an appropriate song to sing along to, professing good fortune and many wins for the year to come.

February: “Jagga Jagga” — Eedris Abdul Kareem

As the same disheartening events tend to be repeated every election cycle, this February, in particular, left Nigerians with the same sentiments Eedris Abdul Kareem crooned on the (unfortunately) ever-relevant “Jagga Jagga”.

March: “So Beautiful” — Asa

All over the world, March is celebrated as Women’s Month, with Mother’s Day falling within this month as well. Asa’s “So Beautiful” is a loving ballad to our mothers and a lovely way of appreciating the wonderful women who birthed, raised and nurtured us.

April: “Alté Cruise” — Odunsi (The Engine) ft. Santi & Zamir

In the past couple of years, the Easter holiday, which falls in April, has become a popping season in Nigeria‘s commercial capital, Lagos. While not as eventful as the Christmas holiday, Easter is still a super fun time, emerging as an alternative holiday period for tourists.

May: “Tuscan Sun” — 234jaydaa

Stuck between the Easter holiday in April and summer in June, May is a rather idle month — one that offers a quick breather. 234jaydaa’s “Tuscan Sun” perfectly embodies what this month is about, as her glorious vocals calmly usher us into the summer.

June: “In The Music” — Omawumi

Originally celebrated in France as Fête de la Musique, June 21 has now become a global day for celebrating music, colloquially dubbed (International) Music Day. Omawumi’s timeless bop, “In The Music” is a great appreciation of just how powerful and unifying music really is.

July: “Raining Outside” — Santi

With Rainy Season typically reaching its peak during this month, it seems it’s always “Raining Outside” during July, so what better song to describe this stormy month than Santi’s phenomenal album starter?

August: “Firewood” — Fresh L ft.Davido

After two solid months of living your best life comes the true test of character. While some cherish the fact that August is still considered summer, others can’t wait to get back to regularly scheduled programming — which is absolutely fine because, as Davido sings, “body no be firewood”.

September: “Bumper To Bumper” — Wande Coal

As summer draws to a close and kids head back to school, traffic on our poorly constructed Nigerian roads gets worse and worse, especially in Lagos. Here, you’ll definitely be going “Bumper To Bumper” with the car in front of you, and might possibly even find yourself in a traffic war.

October: “Ye” — Burna Boy

On October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence from British rule. Every year since, Nigerians have felt obligated to celebrate the day. With the frustrating state of Nigeria, however, Burna Boy’s “Ye” is a more pointed expression of how Nigerians feel about the country.

November: “Iworiwo” — Larry Gaaga ft. 2Baba

There’s not happening in November, besides the start of Harmattan, so this month can get pretty dry.  Our advice to you is to get cuffed up quick, so that you and your bae can live like 2Baba and Annie in the romantic video for “Iworiwo”, where he sings “Harmattan, I want to rub you lotion”.

December: “Able God” — Chinko Ekun ft. Lil Kesh & Zlatan

Whether you’re headed back to your village of origin for the yearly family reunion, or you’re immersed in Lagos and its sleepless nights, December is a distinctly jovial month in Nigeria and the seminal hit, “Able God” perfectly exemplifies the nation’s #moooood
