Last week, Beyoncé dropped the pop-gospel anthem, “Spirit” — the first single of her upcoming project, Lion King: The Gift. Last night, after revealing the album’s star-studded tracklist, Beyoncé dropped the video for “Spirit”, rocking a custom piece from Senegalese brand, Tongoro.
Founded by multi-faceted fashion entrepreneur, Sarah Diouf, the brand is no stranger to mainstream love, as their pieces have been worn by the likes of Naomi Campbell and Alicia Keys. According to their website, the ideal Tongoro woman is “bold, joyful and not afraid to make her own statement”.
For the “Spirit” video, the queen clearly took her intention to properly represent Africa seriously, as she was styled by Zerina Akers — who was also responsible for putting together all her looks when she came to South Africa last year for the Global Citizen Festival.
Not only has Beyoncé sought out artists from all over the continent for this project, but she’s also included local designers into the narrative as well — donning a custom Tongoro pantsuit, durag and earrings. Well, it’s no surprise, as Beyoncé fits the description of the aforementioned Tongoro woman.
For the rest of the accompanying video, we also get clips from the upcoming Lion King remake. This, in addition to the stunning visuals, is getting fans super excited for the film’s release, as well as the Beyonce-curated album, which features Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and more.
