After the 2018 World Cup, Mikel Obi took a career break that got fans asking if he’d retired from international football. Well, after missing a series of qualifiers, he confirmed that he’ll be at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations – just in time for the release of Nigeria‘s provisional list.
With the team warming up for the tournament, Obi shared a video on Instagram showing his trophy cabinet, with the caption “Space left for few more”. Of course, he was talking about winning more trophies, but this left us wondering if he was referring to his club or national career.
You will recall that Obi was part of the Super Eagles team that won the AFCON title in 2013 — making him the most experienced of all the players on the team. However, the 32-year-old hasn’t given fans many reasons to believe he’ll be on the team after the tournament.
Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, even had to have a meeting with him before he agreed to play. Following his exit from Middlesbrough, it seems Obi is more concerned about his club career. So, it’s likely that he’ll be announcing his retirement once he’s done in Egypt.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that announcement is accompanied by a second AFCON trophy?
