The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Dr. Solomon Arase, has raised the alarm over the increasing cases of human rights abuses in the Police Force.

Arase, a retired Inspector General of Police, noted with sadness that human rights abuses had become an ending fight between the Police and the public over the years, and assured of nipping the matter in the bud.

The newly installed PSC chairman, in a statement, yesterday, in Asaba, signed by the Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, said for the Police to excel in its day-to-day operations, there must be consciences for misconduct and benefits for examplary behaviour.

He said the benefits and burden must go together, stressing that he would strive to complement what the Police were currently doing to ensure that the operations conformed with its rules of engagement.

The PSC Chairman who also frown at the actitude of the Police involvement in land matters, stated that “there is no reason whatsoever for the Police to go into land or debt collection issues”.

According to him, the best that could happen is that the matter should be handled through alternative dispute resolution.

He added that he will remain a strong advocate of community partnership in policing the affairs of the Nation for the benefits of all and Sundry.
