Former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has withdrawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s governorship primary in Imo State.
Naija News learnt that Ihedioha, who was screened and cleared a few days ago by the PDP to contest the party’s primary ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Imo State, informed the leadership of the party, of his decision to step down.
According to Channels TV, the former governor in a letter dated March 27, 2023, said his decision is based on personal sacrifice for a consensus candidate by the party.
Imo Is 100% PDP
Meanwhile, Emeka Ihedioha had a few weeks ago boasted that PDP would win massively in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of members of the Council at the party’s Secretariat in Owerri, Ihedioha said the PDP would defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP) in 2023.
According to the former governor sacked by the Supreme Court, the state has been predominantly PDP since 1999 and so had good chances of winning the 2023 general elections at all levels.
In January 2020, the Supreme Court sacked Ihedioha as the governor of Imo State after barely seven months in office.
The seven-man panel led by Chief Justice Tanko Muhammad unanimously declared Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of the March 19, 2019 governorship election in the state.
The appellant, Uzodimma had contended that he scored the highest number of votes in the election but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returned Ihedioha as the governor of the state.
