Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler, The Creator) has been a massive influencer of culture since he first broke out with his group, Odd Future. Alongside making music, the gifted multi-hyphenate is also a tour de force in the television and fashion industry.
Given this, the Nigerian-American is a lot more popular than his music. Fortunately, things seem to be changing in that regard, as he has finally landed himself his first number 1 spot in the Billboard 200 albums chart, courtesy of his new album, IGOR.
According to The New York Times, the album earned 165,000 equivalent album units — selling 74,000 albums and gaining 122.9 million song streams. On the Billboard 200 chart, IGOR bested DJ Khaled’s star-studded studio album, Father Of Asahd.
The Billboard 200 is a record chart that ranks the 200 most popular studio albums and EPs in the United States. It is published weekly by Billboard magazine, and it’s frequently used to convey the popularity of an artist or groups of artists.
This feat is particularly special, as the entire project was written, arranged and produced entirely by Tyler himself. We’re glad that after so long, he’s getting the recognition he deserves, and, hopefully, this spurs him on to creating more fire projects.
