From the moment he broke out in 2011 with the instantly infectious “Holla At Your Boy”, Wizkid has barely disappointed fans, constantly dropping quality tracks that have made him one of the biggest stars out of the continent.
It’s no secret that as well as being one of the shapers of afropop as we know it today, Wizkid frequently looks to other artists (and genres) for inspiration, mining sonic influences from vintage hits, obscure gems and a lot more.
Whether you’re a die-hard Wizkid fan, or you just want to know where that particular vocal sample that has been niggling in your mind was taken from, here’s a list of seven songs Wizkid has sampled in his impressive catalogue.
“Manya” (VIP -“Ahomka Wemu”)
In 2017, Wizkid came back from a hiatus with the undeniable hit, “Manya”. The song definitely benefits greatly from the nostalgic sample of VIP’s noughties hit, “Ahomka Wemu”, which upon being played demands one to hang up any kind of home training.

“Naughty Ride” (Bob Marley & The Wailers – “Ride Natty Ride”)
On his tepidly received album, Sounds From The Other Side, one of the tracks that really stood out was the Major Lazer-aided “Naughty Ride”, and we have Bob Marley’s “Ride Natty Ride” to thank for the song’s infectious melody.

“Jaiye Jaiye” (Fela – “Lady”)
Wizkid has never been coy about being heavily influenced by Fela, and the best example of this is “Jaiye Jaiye”, which samples Fela’s “Lady”. Enlisting the legend’s son, Femi Kuti adds an extra layer of authenticity, making the tracks an instant classic.

“Gbese” (Tic Tac & Tony Tetuila – “Fefe n’efe”)
On Wizkid’s latest appearance — a guest spot on DJ Tunez’s “Gbese” — the afropop titan includes a super bubbly sample from another noughties jam, Tic Tac and Tony Tetuila’s “Fefe n’efe”, making for another nostalgia-infused banger.

“Holla At Your Boy” (SE7EN – GIRLS ft Lil’ Kim)
Wizkid’s breakout track was the immensely catchy “Holla At Your Boy”, and it turns out we have an under-the-radar Korean pop star to thank for that. “Holla At Your Boy” samples the flow and melody of SE7EN’s Lil’ Kim-assisted banger, “GIRLS”.

“Sweet Love” (Fela – “Shakara”)
“Sweet Love”, another standout off Wizkid’s last album, Sounds From The Other Side, benefits from its perfectly utilised Fela sample. On the song, he presents a perfect blend of afrobeat and dancehall, making for a very enjoyable listen.

“In My Bed” (Dru Hill – “In My Bed”)
Beyond the title, the chorus for Wizkid’s “In My Bed” draws influence from the Sisqo-led group’s love song of the same name. Given that both songs sound nothing alike, it’s pretty amazing that Wizkid could pull off this sample so successfully.
